ENSEMBLE NU:N About the unlucky, angels and singing mutes photo © Salar Ghazi A mute came along to sing / without a word at the top of his voice. / If Warnevillers hadn't been around / they would have been drowned in a vein / in the head of a wild boar. (Fatrasie, Arras 13th C.) Ensemble Nu:n sets out to explore the sense of humour of the Middle Ages. In medieval pubs and churches they encountered surprising testimonies of sacral buffoonery as well as profane satire. Because the joke tends to lean on the earnest, because mockery needs glamorization, and laughter can't do without a tear, the program includes - as a counterweight to the portion of grotesque satire, sarcasm and self-mockery - a number of medieval songs that praise the more serious world view of that era. Sheer beauty and deep devotion appear to be topics shared by pious worshippers as well as languishing troubadours. Can we still laugh or cry about it after 750 years ? „Cora Schmeisers beautiful enchanting soprano hovers over the tapestry of string sounds. With a twink of the eye she reveals the sarcasm, the malignancy and the self-mockery of the troubadours of that time. From 2011 on, he and the Berlin based saxophonist and composer Gert Anklam and the soprano Cora Schmeiser tour through Germany, Austria and Denmark. N:un Vokal performed in different settings, in numerous concert series and festivals in many important medieval churches.
