“In this time of hard work I cordially invite you to come and visit me for a good laugh.” With these words the German painter, sculptor, graphic designer, collagist, poet, pamphlettist, typographer, copywriter and author Kurt SCHwitters (1887-1948) announced a 'happy evening', on which daily worries would cease and visitors were permitted to laugh about others’ weaknesses. In November of 1923, such a 'Merz'-evening featured six topics, beginning with an intermission.
SCHapo! is a post-dadaistic evening with a happy surprise-program dedicated to Kurt SCHwitters. SCHapo! is a disordering 60 minute performance, quite in the spirit of the MERZ-master, created by the ‘vocals’ Cora SCHmeiser and NataSCHa Morsink (voice and performance), and ‘consonant’ Arnold SCHalks (design and technique).
'SCHapo' was performed in the Goethe Institut Rotterdam, on NS-railway station Delden, at Stichting Podiumkunsten Emmakade, The Hague, and in OCW, stage for small scale events, Rotterdam.
